My biggest struggle when it comes to being a productive human being is waking up in the morning …. 😴😅

In college I was that kid who went to bed at 4am and woke up at 4pm. I slept 12-13 hours straight and lived a nocturnal life.

But, hey … I’m not in college anymore. And as much as we want to deny it, the most successful people in this world are the ones who wake up earliest. Alex Hormozi wakes up at 4am, David Goggins wakes up at 3am, Jeff Bezos wakes up at 6:30am.

If they can do it after 30, obviously my 23-year-old body can make it happen, no matter how many times I want to make the excuse - “I’m getting older, I shouldn’t feel this tired! I need more sleep.”

No, you don’t. You need more discipline.

These past few weeks have been a wakeup call for me. With Omar on his world tour, I took this as my chance to be brutal. To build those habits it’s so easy to lose when you’re basking in lovebird dopamine & it seems just fine to wake up at 10am on a workday. Hey, at least you’re happy! Lol. No.

I’ve been progressively bringing that wake up time down from 9:30am to 6am and boy it’s been rough.

It’s literally changing the wiring of your brain - the brain that tells me “hey, it’s really early. You can go back to sleep for 20,” and 20-minutes later tells me “hey, you already went back to sleep & it’s late now. Might as well just sleep more.”

This is the part of your brain that doesn’t want you to hit your goals. It wants you to stay cozy and complacent.

Even today, I planned to get up early - but hey, when that 8am alarm went off my brain hit me with the ol’ “It’s Sunday! You can sleep in a bit more, you deserve it and it’ll prepare you for the week ahead…”

And there I was, waking up at almost 10am again.

It’s easy to relapse. Not easy to stay hard. Because we’re always fighting a battle with versions of ourselves - and when I’m succeeding, I’m thinking of the future me.

Because she tells me to get the f*** up!

Here are the TWO STEPS to Changing Yourself Forever

1. Decide the type of person you want to be
2. Prove it to yourself with small wins every day

This might sound simple, but I will GUARANTEE none of you are using this approach, and that’s why you haven’t been able to change just yet.

See, what you’re probably doing is this –
“I’ve decided I want to have six-pack abs. I’m going to the gym every day!”
“I’ve decided I want to get over this breakup. I’m going to go out with friends & get a rebound!”

Now that’s a completely logical way of going about it. You identify an outcome that you want to achieve or a result you want to obtain, and you plan action steps to achieve that outcome.

However …
This doesn’t work. Simple.

Why?

Because you are not currently an athletic person at heart. You are not currently an emotionally stable person at heart. You are treating symptoms – the outcome – instead of the disease – who you are, at heart.

As humans, we are programmed to be consistent with who we are and what our identity is. Whatever identity we have build up through years of habits will remain as it is in perpetuum because as humans, we hate to contradict ourself and our self-image. Eventually we will fall back into our habits and think, “well, I’m just not a fit person. Just not a gymshark like they are. Wasn’t meant to be.”

What does that mean for you?

That means if you want to change, you can’t focus on the outcome. You need to focus on what kind of person you want to be.

If you want to get a sixpack, you need to think, “I want to be the type of person who is athletic and consistent.”

If you want to get over your breakup, you need to think, “I want to be the type of person who is emotionally stable, able to move on, and capable of letting go.”

Only by first CHANGING YOUR IDENTITY can you undergo the process of achieving the outcome you desire.

We’re humans, after all. We’re biased to stick to actions consistent with our self-image, positive or negative, no matter what. So, if you want to change that, simple.

Change your SELF-IMAGE.

That’s the key.

What is the Plateau of Latent Potential?

Have you ever looked at someone who others call an “overnight success” & wonder how they did it?

Now I want you to think about an airplane lifting off. The pilot rams the throttle. You’re zipping down the runway, until suddenly you’re airborne.

The truth is …

Nothing happens overnight. Nothing happens instantly.

Achieving something worthwhile isn’t possible by changing one of your habits for a matter of days or even weeks. You won’t get six-pack abs by going to the gym for one week. You won’t become a world-renowned musician by practicing the clarinet for three months.

There is a period of disappointment between when you begin to apply a habit, and when you see tangible results. It’s during this period that most people give up.

I’ve been meditating every day for the last week, why do I still have anxiety? I’ve been running a mile every day for the past two weeks, why can’t I keep up with my jogging friends? I’ve been watching what I eat for three weeks, why do I still have a belly? I’ve been building up my business for the last 6 months, why have I not reached 5-figs per month?

Most people would look at the “lack of results” & give up. Say that “it’s just not working for me.”

But right when you aren’t expecting it, something will happen. All of those little habits and miniscule changes will lead to The Big One.

It’s the difference between being on the ground & in the air. Being a nobody vs. an overnight success.

And when you are making progress & implementing these new habits consistently, wading through the period of disappointment, it only takes ONE spark – ONE more day – until you cross over the Plateau of Latent Potential and are “suddenly” a success. “Suddenly” see results. “Suddenly” achieve your goals.
Passing that plateau & overcoming disappointment is the REAL hard part.

But once you do, BAM!

You’re an overnight success.

But no one knows the truth … it was the buildup of months of habits, consistent work, & willpower that made you what you are. NOT luck. NOT talent.

HABIT.

Your Ego is NOT the enemy…

“Drop your ego!”
“You’re being so egotistical!”
“Your ego is the size of your head!”

Ever heard any of those before? It’s no wonder we all think of “ego” as this dark demon that makes us narcissistic and drives us down the dark path of pride …

But we’ve got it all wrong.

Our ego is NOT a demon. In fact, our ego is our protector. Our guardian angel. That guy looking out for our well-being.

But here’s the thing …

In the ego’s eyes, our “well-being” equates to our survival. Plain and simple. Are you still breathing today? Yes? Okay, good. Job well done!

The ego knows nothing of morals. Ethics. “Right” or “wrong.” Values. Mindsets. Success.

Our ego wants to protect us. Wrap us up in its loving embrace & coddle us from the world. But we aren’t cavemen anymore. Pure survival is no longer our metric of success.

And THAT’S why we often need to kick our ego to the curb. It’s misguided. It doesn’t know what’s best for our life, love, long-term success …

Here’s an example.

Someone you love hurts your feelings. Maybe they don’t call you enough, or they said something hurtful. Your ego says, “Be hurt! Cry! Pity yourself! Exact revenge on them! Be petty! Be passive aggressive! Be angry! Confront them! Leave them!”

Our ego saw that something hurt us, and wants us to take MASSIVE egoic action against the thing that hurt us.

Survival instinct, remember? Same sort of primal thing you’d do if a bear attacked you in the woods.

But is doing any of that in our best interest, or our partner’s best interest, or our relationship’s best interest?

Of course not. It’s exactly the opposite.

It’s in these cases that we need to look at the ego, treat it like a little, misguided child, and be the bigger person. Don’t hate your ego, just tune it out. It loves you, but it’s toxic.

Instead, be calm. Collected. Rational. Forgiving. Empathic. Understanding. Loving.

This is what will guide you to happiness. NOT your ego’s little self-serving games!

Happiness is NOT what you think it is …

What do you imagine when you think of a happy life?

Living in a mansion on the edge of the ocean with a partner & family you love, where you can step right out onto the beach every morning? Buying things without having to look at the price tag? Never working another day in your life? Picking up that passion you dropped as a kid because life just “got in the way?”

You’re probably thinking of a carefree type of life. No problems. No worries. No doubts. Nothing keeping you up at night.

Here’s a bombshell ….

That’s NOT happiness.

Happiness is NOT the absence of problems. In fact, happiness isn’t even an ENTITY.

It’s an ACTION.

Happiness is …

Problem-solving.

Pure, straight-up, no-frills problem-solving.

We gain true happiness from having an issue, and BESTING it. You’ve been striving to get into a good university and finally made it into Yale? Amazing! You’re not happy because of Yale. You’re happy because your goal was to get into an amazing school - and you achieved your goal!

So if happiness isn’t getting rid of all of our problems, what are we working towards?

Easy.

Finding the RIGHT type of problems. Solving the problems that we LOVE. That we’re PASSIONATE about. Don’t think about the car, house, salary at the end of the road. That’s not true happiness.

Think about what problems you’re dying to solve. The ones that keep you up at night, strategizing & thinking & inspiring you to solve them. What kind of PAIN you love to endure …

THAT is true happiness.

Finally publishing your book. Getting a lit agent. Starting your own business. Getting into uni.

So if problem-solving is TRUE happiness, then you have a decision to make:

What kind of problems do you LOVE solving?

THAT is what you should center your life around. Not the end goal.

Does writing about your trauma make it WORSE?

If I had a quarter for how many times I’ve seen “self-reflection” and “journaling” on the list of items that can help improve your mental health and get you through traumatic experiences …

I’d be on a yacht. Full-stop.

But let’s take a step back.

Followers of the master himself, David R. Hawkins - you know, that guy who wrote “Letting Go” - might remember what he said about expression:

Expressing your negative emotions is the OPPOSITE of overcoming them. You don’t destroy them, you STRENGTHEN them.

So why write about them, right?

Because writing isn’t just a tool of expression.

It’s a tool of introspection. Self-awareness. Realization. Perspective. Opening the mind. Epiphanies.

Studies have shown that writing about trauma actually LESSENS its emotional burden.

Why?

Because the first step to Letting Go of a negative experience or emotion, is to realize exactly where it came from. To be self-aware. To understand exactly how an event from your past created the behavior you’re experiencing today. That’s not something we’re given after trauma.

That’s something we UNLOCK.

And guess what?

That’s also one of the first steps in Hawkins’s Letting Go.

Understand the emotions you’re feeling. See them. Recognize them. Don’t give in to them - but see them for what they are.

Self-awareness is the only way to heal.

Because…

How do we heal from something we aren’t even aware of?

Writing is that tool.

So next time you’re repressing or suppressing some emotion, go on. Write about it.

Writing is healing. ♥️

Idk if this is the worst but … I once cryogenically froze my main character for four decades. What she didn’t know is that her soulmate didn’t freeze himself along with her … and when she woke up over 40 years later, he was already dead. ⁣

Oops … was that too traumatic? 🙃 I think so. Definitely felt bad for that one. 😩⁣
